While the majority of nightlife venues in Surfers Paradise focus on ultra commercial dance music usually with an urban/R&B night thrown in, Elsewhere Bar is somewhat different. You might say it’s for the more discerning clubber – but without being elitist at all.
While many other venues project a shiny glam image, Elsewhere has a cool and colourful vibe with a slight touch of industrial. Concrete and exposed steel beams, a flashing-light dancefloor, art by local artists on the walls and low key lighting. The bars are well stocked with local and international drinks and the staff know their stuff.
Musically, you can expect what you would find from the better clubs around the country and further afield. In fact, the club was started in 2003 by Sean Fremder, Simone Jenkins and Benny Roney, who were originally involved in running some of the most successful nightclubs in Australia – including onesixone in Melbourne.
You will hear perhaps the best selection of electronic music anywhere on the Gold Coast at Elsewhere, and the venue features live music too. It has been used as a location for music videos by acts including Sneaky Sound System and for fashion shoots too.
Awards it has won include Best Bar (Gold Coast Bulletin 2006), Australia’s Best Music Offering (7th Annual Bar Awards 2007 – the first Gold Coast venue to ever win the award) and was a finalist in the 2008 & 2009 Australian Liquor Awards. So if you want to avoid the cheese in town, you know where to go. Elsewhere Bar is located at 23 Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise. Telephone (07) 5592 6880.
