Gold Coast band The Vultures are making quite a name for themselves with their energetic live shows and an impressive recent EP release. We were lucky enough to get them to spare us some time for an interview.
Ok, so first up: who is in the band?
Jay Varudo: Well there are three of us: Joe, Liam and myself. Liam our Guitarist/Vocalist fronts the band and really interacts with the crowd whilst our drummer, Joe keeps us together! I play bass and thump along I guess!
How long have you been playing?
Joe MacPhail: We’ve has been an active band since March 2012 however Liam and myself have been constantly jamming and playing together since the end of 2008.
How would you describe your sound?
Liam Bowditch: We’re sort of like an energetic, blues infused rock trio at the moment!
Which bands have been the biggest influence (musically or otherwise)?
Jay: I’d say Jack White would be a massive influence on me personally; he’s a musical genius! He has both aspects of blues and rock with his solo career, and his bands The White Stripes and The Dead Weather!
How do you feel about the Gold Coast live music scene?
Liam: There’s a great amount of togetherness within the Gold Coast music scene. Even though there isn’t a great deal of bands/artists, everyone seems to work together well and have each other’s backs. However, the limited amount of live venues and areas for musicians to work is appalling, and simply doesn’t accommodate the great talents the city has to offer.
What was you favourite/best gig to date and why?
Liam: I would have to say the first gig! It was one of those battle of the bands competitions back at the beginning of last year. After a year of playing together and rehearsing, it was magical having everything fall into place for the first time.
Tell us about the EP you just released.
Joe: On September 23rd (2014) we dropped our second studio release titled, The Vultures EPII. We worked with Mark Perry at Empire Studios in Brisbane who engineered and mixed it, and then we got it mastered with Tim Butcher (who also mastered our previous self-titled release). We had lots of fun producing this rock oriented EP and felt great to get the songs out!
