The Palazzo Versace opened to the public in the year 2000, to much fanfare and acclaim. It certainly is one of a kind – at least within Australia.
Since opening, it has gone on to win many awards, including Luxury Travel Magazine’s “Best Australian Hotel” four years in a row. The hotel changed ownership in 2012, and is now owned by a Chinese concern.
What can you say about the style of the Palazzo Versace? Visually, it is striking: elegant, luxurious, very Italian, romantic and perhaps even a little over-the-top. Think marble floors, mosaics, gold detailing, parquetry, chandeliers and the Versace brand virtually everywhere.
It’s certainly not cheap: depending on season and what type of room you want, the best discounted price you will find will probably be in the $400 to $600 per night range. There are approximately 200 rooms and suites, some of them surprisingly close to the road: we’d recommend perhaps booking a lagoon room if you are a light sleeper.
It must be said the standard of furnishing, linen and so on is exceptional. However, recently rooms have been undergoing the process of being refurbished – of course, this is a good thing but getting an un-refurbished room at these prices may disappoint. We also believe that to charge extra for something as basic as WIFI when you are paying this kind of room rate is a bit unwarranted.
The hotel’s facilities are certainly very impressive. You have award-winning restaurants, the stunning 65 metre heated outdoor lagoon pool, a high quality Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, a Spa Retreat – even the hotel’s own private marina.
It’s certainly not for everyone – if you prefer contemporary minimal styling you are better of elsewhere – and, of course, it’s not in everyone’s budget. But for a special occasion or even just for a touch of decadence, it may be just what you are looking for.
