First of all Surfers Paradise YHA is not actually in Surfers Paradise, it’s in Main Beach. So straight away, that’s a minus for misleading potential guests about the location.
Which is a pity, because the marina location itself is very nice and the beach is a short walk away. But we feel it’s dishonest to make people believe they are staying somewhere they are not.
With that out of the way, you can walk from the hostel to Surfers in 30 minutes or so and there are a few free shuttle buses a day. The public bus will set you back about $5.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you are staying in quite an upmarket area, and most local businesses are not aimed at catering to to anyone on a very low budget.
You have a choice of dormitory rooms with four or six beds, or double/twin rooms. These are all pretty basic, and while YHA standards are usually pretty high this is more of your average backpacker guesthouse standard and nothing special.
The rooms are not air-conditioned. The official YHA site lists this place as “not recommended for families”, which should tell you something. If you are not a YHA member you will pay more than a 20% surcharge on member prices.
Aside from the free shuttle bus, there is a smallish television room and kitchen. There is internet access, but you have to pay: note that the nearby McDonald’s has free WiFi.
We don’t like the misleading name, and if you are on a very low budget you are probably better of staying somewhere else. Unless you particularly want to stay in this part of Main Beach, you should consider staying somewhere like Budds in Surfers for the central location.
Surfers Paradise YHA is located at Mariners Cove, 70 Seaworld Drive in Main Beach. Telephone (07) 5571 1776.
