Edit: Swingin’ Safari ceased trading in 2014
If you are looking for something fun and a bit different, a visit to Swingin’ Safari might be just what you need.
This converted Queensland Beachouse opened as kind of an experiment, and proved to be so popular that it’s still going strong today.
It has a completely retro look and feel, kind of a flashback to the 60s and 70s. This is a concept that can either work very well, or be a corny embarrassment – obviously from it’s success, Swingin’ Safari has got it just right.
It’s a fun place to enjoy a meal or snack, a few drinks and entertainment which includes live bands, burlesque, DJs, cabaret and comedy.
The venue can hold up to 400 people, and has a number of differently themed areas both inside and outside of the building.
Dining is available from Wednesday to Sunday between the hours of 5.30pm and 11pm. The menu, while not massive, is good and offers tapas mixed plates, mains like pasta or steak and there are some nice gourmet-style pizzas too. The menu will vary according to season.
While events can change, just to give you an idea we have listed weekly calendar current for January 2014: check their website (bottom of the page) for the latest:
Tuesday: The Tango Club
Wednesday: Musicians Club
Thursday: Salon Night
Friday: Friday Night Live
Saturday: House Party
Sunday: Beach Club
The place is run as a self employed Co-op: the staff are passionate about it and that comes across quite clearly. So while you may be served by dis-interested backpackers in some of Surfers Paradise’s venues, an evening here is genuine fun.
We love it: it’s unique, and a highly enjoyable place to spend a few hours, whether you’re dining or not.
Swingin’ Safari is located on the corner of Thornton Street & Gold Coast Highway in Surfers Paradise. Telephone (07) 5538 3762
