There is a great selection of watersports to be enjoyed on the Gold Coast: here we take a look at some of the most popular. Pricing, features and conditions do vary from company to company, so please check directly with the operator first before you make a booking.
There is little that compares to the exhilaration that comes from a jet ski ride: don’t take our word for it – give it a try! The models vary but typically you may get a 1500cc machine that is capable of reaching speeds of up to 100km/hour and beyond. The hire of these is charged by the hour or part thereof, and they can carry two people – the driver and one passenger.
While no license is required, you will be given a safety briefing and be able to do some test laps to get used to it. Note that the driver needs to be a minimum of 16 years old (in some cases 18) and reputable companies enforce a zero alcohol policy.
You can also enjoy riding a jet ski as part of a group tour, where you will follow a guide who will show you some of the local highlights. Tours of an hour will typically take in the sights of South Stradbroke Island.
With a jet boat you get to experience not only the power of the boat but also the maneuvering skills of the skipper, who are expert at delivering all kinds of slips, slides and even 360 degree turns. The boats range in power from around 350hp (Horse-Power) to well over 600hp, and carry 10 to 20 passengers on average depending on the capacity. Most Gold Coast jet boat tours last approximately 55 minutes.
Parasailing is a highly enjoyable activity that is popular with all ages. Typically you will go out onto the Gold Coast Broadwater on a boat as part of a small group. These tours usually last an hour or so, and participants will spend about 10 minutes of that time up in the air. You can usually decide whether you want to stay dry or get your feet wet! If you would like to parasail with another person you may be able to do it in tandem.
Kayak and Boat Hire
All kinds of vessels can be hired from 1 & 2 person kayaks to cruisers and catamarans – for an hour or two or for a full day. No special experience or licence are usually required, and all necessary safety equipment will be supplied. The reason that no experience is required is because the type of boats that are available for hire are easy to operate. With the wide range of boats on offer you are highly likely to find just what you are looking for.
